Eco-friendly materials take off

Anxious to meet current environmental challenges, the nautical industry is increasingly turning to the use of renewable and natural materials in the construction of yachts.

Whether they are intended for jets, yachts or residences, interior designs are undergoing a real revolution. The use of interior volumes must transform vision into reality, the form to respond as much as possible to function, and it is in this area that research is progressing well. Weight gain is also highly sought after, particularly on board jets, but also on board yachts. Carbon fiber has been widely used for several years, but the main concern of designers and creators is the possibility of using recyclable materials. Vegetable fibers are regularly used in the manufacture of parts and surfaces that are not subject to structural efforts to replace carbon fiber.

While many shipyards maintain within their walls the mastery of the manufacture of fittings thanks to the talent of their artisans carpenters and cabinetmakers, superyacht builders also use renowned manufacturers such as Metrica Interiors, established in several countries for many years, industrially producing the interiors of large yachts.

At the forefront of the research of new materials, the Austrian company F/LIST was recently recognized for its work in the use of organic materials particularly intended for aircraft interiors. The manufacture of these decorative materials uses technologies as remote as the work of diamond dealers and aerospace, at the forefront of chemical processes. Three new materials are already on the market. AENIGMA, designed for all types of surfaces, can be found on a residential driveway on the floor of a yacht or that of a jet and lends itself to all types of decor. WHISPER made from plants, light and fine, is a flexible textile that looks like leather and can be applied to all types of surfaces. These new materials offer an unlimited range of uses on board jets, yachts and homes.

Nature at the center of concerns

The PEGASUS project designed in 3D by the designer Georges Forakis perfectly illustrates the point. Volume and space are greatly enhanced thanks to the exterior light and the layouts are designed in a minimalist way. The exterior structures are also light in appearance, and at the center of the yacht, crossing the four decks, “The Tree of Life” and its garden are there to bring us back to the essentials.
